Rodents Are Coming !
November 2012
Greetings!

Rodents are coming. The rodents are coming. Mark my words you'll be inundated with rodent calls with the first cold snap.  Prepare for Rodent Infestation calls now!

Common signs of Rodent Infestation

  • Rodents have muscle memory. They use their muscles to detect the pathways to use again and again. That's why they usually travel along the side of something. This is where you place your traps.
  • Droppings and urine are located wherever they rest or travel.
  • Gnaw marks darken over time; fresh marks are light. Mice make scratch marks approx. 1/16 of an inch; rats make 1/8 inch scratch marks.  Larger marks are typically squirrel.
  • Rodents leave body oil, grease, and dirt along their paths. New marks smear; old ones flake.
  • Use a tracking powder like mason's line chalk for detecting difficult to determine areas of use.  Their tails drag and footprints will be evident the next day.

Tips and Hints

  1. Use food that is MORE attractive than what's available. (N.B. Squirrel & Rodent Paste Bait is a professionals favorite!)
  2. Our motto: Make the animal work for the bait! Place bait in bottom of the bait cup on the snap trap trigger or tie down bait at the back of a cage.
  3. Bait glue boards.  BUT do not use an oily substance as this will reduce the glue board's stickiness. Keep glue boards away from dust and wet.
Use nesting materials like dental floss or cotton threads with a drop of bait or lure to attract mice and rats.

As always thank you for your valued business!

America Gone Wild

America Gone Wild
The Wall Street Journal, November 2, 2012

This year, Princeton, N.J., has hired sharpshooters to cull 250 deer from the town's herd of 550 over the winter. The cost: $58,700. Columbia, S.C., is spending $1 million to rid its drainage systems of beavers and their dams. The 2009 "miracle on the Hudson," whenUS Airways flight 1549 had to make an emergency landing after its engines ingested Canada geese, saved 155 passengers and crew, but the $60 million A320 Airbus was a complete loss. In the U.S., the total cost of wildlife damage to crops, landscaping and infrastructure now exceeds $28 billion a year ($1.5 billion from deer-vehicle crashes alone), according to Michael Conover of Utah State University, who monitors conflicts between people and wildlife.

Those conflicts often pit neighbor against neighbor. After a small dog in Wheaton, Ill., was mauled by a coyote and had to be euthanized, officials hired a nuisance wildlife mitigation company. Its operator killed four coyotes and got voice-mail death threats. A brick was tossed through a city official's window, city-council members were peppered with threatening emails and letters, and the FBI was called in. After Princeton began culling deer 12 years ago, someone splattered the mayor's car with deer innards

Wyoming Wolf Management from the NTA

Folks,
As many of you are aware, delisting of wolves in Wyoming was announced by US Fish and Wildlife Service on August 31, 2012. After a 30 day waiting period this rule will go into effect. Wyoming's wolf season will begin October 1st, 2012.
Delisting of wolves in Wyoming is the result of the efforts of many elected officials, US Fish and Wildlife Service and many others. In its press release, US Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe indicates, "The wolf population has remained healthy under state management in Idaho and Montana, and we're confident that the Wyoming population will sustain its recovery under the management plan Wyoming will implement." A full copy of the USFWS press release can be found at:
http://1.usa.gov/VOoEAw

We want to issue a special thank you to Governor Matt Mead for his efforts to navigate final approval of Wyoming's new wolf management plan. A thank you as well to Senator John Barrasso, Senator Mike Enzi and Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis for their efforts to ensure that Wyoming's wolf management plan could be approved.
A contentious issue in Wyoming's delisting saga has been the "dual status of wolf management in the state." Most of the state of Wyoming is highly unsuitable habitat for wolves. As a result of high levels of conflict in this part of the state, wolves are managed under predator status pursuant to Wyoming's management plan. Wolves are managed as a trophy game animal in the Northwest corner of the state which is not only suitable habitat for wolves, but also holds most of the state's wolves. The dual status of wolves under Wyoming's wolf management plan was litigated in the 10th circuit before Judge Johnson. In a ruling dated, November 18, 2010, Judge Johnson found that the previous refusal to delist the gray wolf in Wyoming due to the fact that the entire state of Wyoming was not designated as a trophy game area was arbitrary and capricious. In its August 31, 2012 press release, US Fish and Wildlife Service acknowledged the dual status of Wyoming's wolf management plan by stating, "Biologists have determined that the vast majority of Wyoming's wolf population and habitat is located in northwest Wyoming, where wolves will be managed as 'trophy game' animals year-round."
With less than 2 weeks before Wyoming's wolf season begins, wolf hunting permits can be purchased online at:
http://wgfd.wyo.gov/web2011/home.aspx. Resident permits are $18 and non-resident permits are $180. A number of news organizations indicate that 1,000 permits have been sold to date. Harvest will be limited to 52 wolves during the upcoming season. Given low success rates of past hunts conducted in Idaho and Montana it will be interesting to see how long it will take to fulfill the 52 wolf quota. Whether or not you intend to participate in Wyoming's wolf season, we encourage sportsmen to purchase a wolf-permit in the state of Wyoming to support conservation efforts in the state.
We will keep you apprised of developments of Wyoming's wolf delisting as they occur.

Company.Western logo

The deal, pending regulatory approval expected later this year, includes $99.6 million paid upfront and another $15 million within 18 months.

Anaheim-based Western Exterminator recorded 2011 EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $4.1 million and reported $36.7 million in gross assets.

Founded in 1921 and employing more than 1,000 people, Western Exterminator recorded 2011 revenue of about $149 million, with approximately 40 percent generated by its Target Specialty Products subsidiary. Santa Fe Springs, Calif.-based Target serves the pest control, landscape, golf and nursery markets. In total, Western Exterminating employs more than 1,000 people and operates 36 offices across Arizona, California and Nevada; the trio of states it serves have a combined population of 46 million.

London-based Rentokil, a leading global services provider, recorded more than $4.1 billion in revenue last year.

"This acquisition significantly increases Rentokil's footprint in the world's largest pest control market and enables us to compete more effectively, particularly for customers looking for nationwide coverage in pest control or specialty chemical distribution," said Rentokil CEO Alan Brown.

"We have taken our U.S. Pest Control and Products business from (annual) revenue of less than $30 million to $420 million through a series of successful acquisitions, most notably J.C. Ehrlich, Presto-X, and now Western, over the past seven years."

Parker Dozhier Passes..........

Parker Dozhier

The trapping community mourns the loss of a true icon and friend as Parker Dozhier passed away last week.
"Under any circumstances, it's a hard chore to write about the death of a friend," Trapper & Predator Caller Executive Editor Jim Spencer said. "But when that friend is also a co-worker, a peer, a mentor, a fellow practitioner of your passions and one of your personal heroes to boot, it's doubly hard. Parker Dozhier was all of those things to me, and now that he's gone, he's left a hole."

“It’s not one that will be filled any time soon. Parker walked with a huge footprint in this industry — probably bigger than any other single person since John Jacob Astor. Certainly bigger than anyone alive today. He had enemies — no one could be as plain-spoken and forthright as Parker Dozhier was and not make some — but his friends throughout the fur trade and beyond far outnumbered those who didn’t like him. We will all miss him terribly.”

Dozhier, who had been battling cancer, became one of the most respected voices in the fur industry through his work as a trapper, consultant, rural fur dealer and fur marketing agent. He traveled the world in the name of fur. Through his efforts, the otter and muskrat fur trade opened in China in 1985. It was the first export of North American furs to mainland China since 1949.

As the fur market expert for Trapper & Predator Caller, Dozhier provided an integral link between trappers and the fur market. From the January 1983 issue of Trapper & Predator Caller through the January 2012 issue, Dozhier penned the “Fur Market Report.” With unrivaled knowledge of the fur industry and an incredible array of friends, sources and business acquaintances in every corner of the globe, he was largely recognized as the most reliable fur market analyst in the world.
Dozhier, who lived near Hot Springs, Ark., was 70 years old.
Wildlife Control Supplies sends our deepest condolences to the Dozhier family.
